Informative Writing

In this unit, we will developing our skills in Informative Writing. The purpose of informative writing is to educate your reader on a topic. Informative writing comes in many forms. It can be used to define a topic, compare and contrast, analyze data, or create a how-to. Informative writing DOES NOT give an opinion or attempt to persuade its reader on a topic.

Who is Cam Newton? 

• What experiences have impacted on Newton? 
• Is he 'great'?
• What makes this an informative piece? 

WHO AM I?

Today's task is to write an informative piece about your personality. You should include detailed information about your best and worst personality characteristics, your research on the psychology of personality, quotes from your parents and an image of yourself. It should be 1.5-2 pages in length.

Before we begin writing, let's take a look at the Informative Rubric.

You will have the rest of this class (60mins) to write your informative piece. It is due at the end of class to be submitted as a PDF into Schoology.

Analysis: Ted Talk- The Happy Secret to Better Work

• Skim through transcript and make a copy of 2-3 note-worthy quotes.
• Discuss these quotes in your group. How could athletes apply this information?

Intro to Psychology:

What type of experiences have a positive impact on people?

Can the impact of experiences be determined?

Locus of Control- take this measurement of your Locus of Control.

People who develop an internal locus of control believe that they are responsible for their own success. Those with an external locus of control believe that external forces, like luck, determine their outcomes.

How might this determine your outlook on life? The way you deal with failure?

Personality

Take the Myer-Briggs Personality Inventory to learn more about your personality type. Take a record of your results and what they mean.

Research: Where does Personality come from? Things to consider: nature v nurture, heredity, innate personality traits/temperament.

MLA Guide- make sure that you keep track of your sources.

H/W: Complete your Parent Interview- (in google drop). Have a picture of yourself that you can put into a Google doc. This will be used for your formative assessment on Informative Writing next class (18/01).
